Creating New Content
In this section of the course, you will learn the steps, strategies, and tools necessary to create high-quality, SEO-optimized content.
We'll cover everything from creating content briefs to using Clearscope reports to harnessing the power of AI to generate and refine content. You're about to unlock your superhuman abilities and take your content creation skills to the next level! Here's what we'll cover in this section:
- Choose the keyword you want to target
- Create a content brief
- Use AI to help create your article
- Proofread and fact-check your article
- Publish your article
- Personalize your published article
Step 1: Choose the keyword you want to target
In this section of the course, you’ll learn how to use Clearscope's keyword discovery to identify interesting and relevant keywords for your content. We'll show you how to access the tool, how it works and the data it provides.
It’s easy! 👌
- Go to Clearscope's keyword discovery by clicking on "keyword discovery" in the navigation bar.
- Enter a high-level topic or subtopic that you would like to create your content on
- The keyword discovery will show you the most popular Google auto-complete suggestions.
- It will also provide you with data like monthly search volume from Google keyword planner, adwords competition and adwords cost per click for each suggestion.
- Keep in mind that adwords competition and adwords cost per click do not necessarily reflect organic search difficulty.
- You can scroll through the suggestions to find keywords that are trending, which can be good article ideas or sort by other criteria that you might care about.
Step 2: Create a content brief
In this section, you’ll create a content brief.
A content brief is a document that outlines the purpose, scope, and requirements for a piece of content. It includes your main topic, subtopics, goals for the article, and similar.
Here is an example of a finished content brief 👇
Attribute | New article |
Main topic (keyword) | Benefits of exercise |
Goal | Educate readers on this topic
Provide detailed and accurate info |
Specific points | Making exercises a part of the daily routine
Going beyond the physical benefits to the mental benefits
Easy to get started exercises |
Tone | Persuasive
Whimsical |
Citations | |
Questions | What are the 10 important benefits of exercise?
What are 20 benefits of exercise?
What exercise benefits the body?
What are 5 benefits of exercise?
What are the benefits of exercise for the heart? |
Typical word count | 1,900 |
Keywords | physical activity, benefits of exercise, aerobic, blood pressure, health benefits, heart disease, regular physical activity, regular exercise, older adults, type 2 diabetes, mental health, heart rate, aerobic exercise, cardiovascular disease, moderate-intensity, obesity, gov, cholesterol, well-being, quality of life, weight loss |
Learnings from top articles | View their content |
Let’s get started!
You’ll want to have your content brief template open so you can follow long.
You’ll also need to have Clearscope opened to the report for your main topic.
First up, you will choose your article’s main topic. It’s an easy one!
Determine the main topic
The main topic of an article is the keyword you want the article to rank for. For example, if the target keyword is “benefits of exercise” then the main topic of the article is “benefits of exercise.”
Now fill in the main topic part of your content brief.
Goal
SEO-optimized articles have three main goals:
- provide valuable info
- persuade or convince readers
- educate readers
Determine the goal of your article by considering the purpose of your article, the needs and interests of your audience, and the keyword you're targeting.
For example, an SEO-optimized article about the benefits of exercise should educate readers on this topic and provide detailed and accurate info.
Specific points
In order to ensure that GPT covers all relevant subtopics, it is important to identify the specific points discussed in your article. These can be determined by using a Clearscope report.
To find the specific points in the Clearscope report screen:
- Look on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Switch from Terms to Outline.
- Look through the headings of the top posts for subtopics.
For example, the subtopics for the keyword “benefits of exercises” are:
- Making exercises a part of the daily routine
- Going beyond the physical benefits to the mental benefits
- Easy to get started exercises =
Tone
Now it’s time to define the tone of your article.
Consider the tone of other content that the audience is likely to be familiar with and enjoy. This can help ensure that the tone of the article resonates with the audience and helps to achieve the desired effect.
Once you figure out the tone for the article, you’ll also want to record the tone of your brand.
To help you figure out the tone for your article, please see the common tones below:
- Formal: Characterized by a professional, academic, or official style, often used in articles for a scholarly or serious audience.
- Informal: Characterized by a conversational, relaxed, or colloquial style, often used in articles for a general or casual audience.
- Objective: Characterized by a neutral, unbiased, or factual style, often used in articles to present information objectively without personal opinions or judgments.
- Subjective: Characterized by a personal, emotional, or opinionated style, often used in articles to express the writer's perspective or point of view.
- Humorous: Characterized by a playful, light-hearted, or amusing style, often used in articles to entertain or amuse the reader.
- Persuasive: Characterized by a persuasive, argumentative, or convincing style, often used in articles to persuade or convince the reader to take action or adopt a viewpoint.
- Inspiring: Characterized by an uplifting, motivational, or inspiring style, often used in articles to motivate or encourage the reader.
- Sensational: Characterized by a sensational, shocking, or provocative style, often used in articles to grab the reader's attention or create a stir.
- Suspenseful: Characterized by a suspenseful, dramatic, or thrilling style, often used in articles to create suspense or excitement.
Select a tone for your article and record it in your content brief.
Now, it's important to record the tone of your brand in your content brief. This will help ensure that the tone of your article aligns with your brand and maintains a consistent tone throughout.
Here are common brand tones:
- Whimsical: Playful, imaginative, or fanciful.
- Direct: Straightforward, honest, or candid.
- Approachable: Friendly, welcoming, or relatable.
- Professional: Polished, refined, or sophisticated.
- Confident: Self-assured, assertive, or bold.
- Passionate: Enthusiastic, energetic, or heartfelt.
- Quirky: Unique, eccentric, or offbeat.
- Bold: Strong, daring, or striking.
- Inspiring: Uplifting, motivational, or aspirational.
- Sarcastic: Mocking, ironic, or sarcastic.
Congratulations! You have now completed the "Tone" section of the content brief.
Well done!
Citations
Now it's time to decide which citations to include in your article. This can help to add credibility and authority to your content, and can also provide valuable information and resources for your readers.
To find the citations in the Clearscope report screen:
- Look on the right-hand side of the screen and switch to the "Research" tab.
- Scroll down to the "Common Citations" section.
- Right-click on each link and open it in a new tab.
- Review each citation to determine its relevance to your article. If you're unsure, err on the side of including the citation.
- Record the URLs of all citations that you plan to use in your content brief.
Now, you can add your own citations to the article. This is where you can incorporate your unique knowledge and perspective. This will help to add value and originality to your content.
Questions
Now, it's time to determine which specific questions your article will answer.
To find the questions in the Clearscope report screen:
- Look on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Switch from Terms to Research.
- Look under the Questions heading.
Wordcount
To improve your chances of ranking well in search engine results, it's important to aim for a similar length to the articles that typically appear in the top 10 search results.
You can use a Clearscope report to determine the typical length of these articles. To find the word count in the Clearscope report screen:
- Look on the left-hand side of the screen.
- The word count is displayed in the left-hand column.
Keywords
Google typically displays content that it determines to be the most relevant to a given search query at the top of the search results. In order for your content to be considered relevant, it should cover specific topics. A Clearscope report can help you identify the specific topics.
To find the keywrods in the Clearscope report screen:
- Look on the right-hand side of the screen and make sure that the "Terms" tab is selected.
- Tap the "Copy" button located under the "Terms" heading and to the right of the "Importance" dropdown.
- When you copy the keywords, each keyword will be on its own line. However, we need the keywords to be separated by a comma and a space. To accomplish this, open up GPT and enter the following prompt: "Change list of keywords from being separated by a line to being separated by a comma and a space."
- Paste the list of keywords below the prompt and run it.
- Copy and paste the top 70% of the resulting keywords (leaving out the bottom 30%) into your content brief.
Your content brief should now be complete!
Step 3: Use AI to help create your article
To start, you will need to have all of your tools open and ready to go. Have your content brief open, Open AI’s playground open, and also a Google Doc to save anything for the article on the fly.
It might also be helpful to create a "Content" folder on Google Drive and a separate folder for each post, so you can easily save variations of your work.
In order to generate your draft, the first thing we need to do is format the content brief into a prompt for GPT.
Step 3A: Create a content outline
To start, you will need to have all of your tools open and ready to go. The first step is to use GPT-3 to write an outline for your article. To do this, follow these steps:
- Make sure that you are using the text-davinci-003 model and that the maximum length is set between 3,000 and 4,000.
- Create your prompt by combining the information from your content brief with the following template:
- "Create an outline for an article about [Your main topic], with a focus on [List your subtopics]."
- For example, if your main topic is "benefits of excercise" and your subtopics are "making excercise a daily routine," "the mental benefits of excercise," and”easy execercises” your prompt would be:
- “Create an outline for an article about the benefits of exercise, with a focus on making exercise a daily routine, the mental benefits of exercise, and easy exercises.”
- Use this prompt to generate an outline for your article using GPT-3.
You should see something like this:
Now that GPT has generated the outline for your article, it's time to review it.
Make sure that the outline covers all of the topics and subtopics you want to include in your article. If there are any points that you don't want to include, or if you think the outline is missing anything important, you can update it as needed.
For example, if the outline generated by GPT for an article about the "benefits of exercise" only included three exercises, but you want to include more, you could ask GPT-3 for a list of easy exercises that can be done at a desk, and then add some to your outline.
Please see the example below:
Once you have reviewed and updated the outline generated by GPT, it's important to remove any additional prompts or instructions that you may have provided. This will ensure that the only text that appears in the Playground is your revised outline. To do this, simply copy the text of any prompts or instructions that you provided, and then delete them from the Playground.
Step 3B: Use AI to develop the article
To create the article, you can use the following prompt for GPT:
Turn the outline into an article. Use a tone that is persuasive and fun, and be sure to include relevant statistics and research findings to support your arguments. Include section headings and make sure to end the article with a conclusion. Keywords to focus on include: physical activity, benefits of exercise, aerobic, blood pressure, health benefits, heart disease, regular physical activity, regular exercise, older adults, type 2 diabetes, mental health, heart rate, aerobic exercise, cardiovascular disease, moderate-intensity, obesity, gov, cholesterol, well-being, quality of life, weight loss. Be sure to cite your sources and provide links to relevant research studies and reports.
- Edit the prompt above to reflect your article.
- Copy the prompt and then go into Playground.
- Increase the maximum length (to at least 2,800 but below 4,000)
- Click “Submit”
You should see an outcome like this:
Step 3C: Use Clearscope and your own expertise to enhance your article
To use Clearscope to further optimize your content for SEO, start by copying the text of your article and pasting it into the Clearscope report for your chosen keyword.
When copying an article from GPT to Clearscope, it is likely that the formatting will not be retained. However, there is a simple trick you can use to preserve the formatting.
- First, copy and paste the article into Google Docs.
- Then, copy and paste the article from Google Docs into Clearscope.
This will retain all of the original formatting in the article!
Now you should having something like this:
After inserting your article into Clearscope, you can begin reviewing it for accuracy and making enhancements as needed.
- Consider the overall content of the article and ensure that it aligns with your own understanding and perspective on the topic.
- Incorporate your own unique insights and knowledge into the article where appropriate.
- If you have products or services related to the topic, you can integrate them into the article in a helpful and informative way. However, be aware that Google can detect biased or promotional content, so it's important to focus on providing value to the reader rather than solely promoting your products.
- Add additional keywords to increase its relevance to the topic and improve its search engine score. Prioritize the keywords at the top of the list. The keywords at the bottom of the list may not have as much impact on the article's score.
- Additionally, take the opportunity to review the headings in the article. Clearscope marks keywords that appear in headings with an "H" next to them. Consider updating the headings to include the top keywords with an "H" to further improve the article's relevance and score.
- If you want to go above and beyond and include all of the suggested keywords, a good way to do so without sacrificing the helpfulness of the article is to add an FAQ section at the bottom. This allows you to include the keywords in a natural and useful way for the reader.
Step 4: Review and publish your content
Step 4A: Fact-Check and Proofread for Accuracy and Credibility
Proofreading and fact-checking are crucial steps to ensure the accuracy and credibility of your article. Have someone else perform this task, such as a friend, team member, or editor. The fact-checker should have knowledge of the subject to accurately verify the information in the article. Designating a fact-checker for your article can improve its credibility and set it apart from competitors. By listing the fact-checker on the article page on your website, you signal to Google that your content has been verified for accuracy, and it can help build trust with your audience.
After you pick a fact checker, copy and paste the bullets below to them, and have them fact-check and proof read your article.
- When proofreading and fact checking your article, it's important to pay attention to grammar, spelling, and the overall flow and structure of the content.
- Verify the accuracy of the sources and citations used in the article, and fact check the information using reliable sources. Ideally, the person performing this task should have knowledge and expertise in the field covered by the article.
- In addition to verifying the accuracy of the information, also review the tone and language used in the article to ensure it is clear and appropriate for the intended audience.
- When proofreading and fact checking the article, be careful not to remove too many of the Clearscope terms, as this can lower the content's score. To avoid this, perform the fact-checking in the Clearscope report or in Google Docs with the Clearscope plugin installed. This will allow you to accurately verify the information in the article while also maintaining its relevance and search engine score.
- Perform a final proofreading and fact checking of the article before publishing it.
Great!
Now that you’re article and been fact-checked and proof read, you can go onto publish it.
Step 5: Publishing your article
Congrats on leveraging your own expertise, fact-checking, and AI technology to produce a killer SEO-optimized and engaging article!
The more you practice this process, the faster and more proficient you will become. Eventually, you will be able to create articles at superhuman speed, lowering your costs significantly compared to working with an SEO agency and achieving better, longer-lasting results.
Now that you have your amazing article, it's time to publish it. Don't simply copy and paste it without properly styling it. Make sure your article is easy to read and includes appropriate heading sizes, images, links, bold and italic text, and other formatting as needed.
By taking the time to properly format your article, you can improve its overall appeal and make it more enjoyable for readers.
Step 6: Personalizing your published article
Distributing your article
Using GPT-3 to create stuff
- Share the article in your newsletter.
- Create 5+ tweets, LinkedIn posts, TikTok videos/Instagram reels/YouTube Shorts.
- Drive users to your newsletter.
Turn every piece of content into numerous smaller pieces and re-use them across channels—tailored to that specific medium and audience.
Drive those people back to your newsletter.
You own your email list. It isn't gated by algorithms.
(Except for the promotions folder.)
Your email list can't be taken away if you were to get banned or if the social network becomes less popular.
(Imagine having a huge Facebook audience!).
Do you have a newsletter?
Are you splicing up content into smaller pieces and sharing on social?
Optimizing existing content
Step 1: Choose the article you want to optimize and the keyword you want to rank for
To begin optimizing your content for SEO, the first step is to choose the content that you want to optimize and the target keyword that you want the content to rank for.
Here's what you need to do:
- Take a look at your blog and choose an article you want to optimize.
- Identify the target keyword that the content was written for. It's the keyword that best describes the main topic of the content.
- Open a Google Doc and create a new document.
- Record the title of the content, a link to the content, and the target keyword in the Google Doc. This will serve as a reference for the optimization process.
Step 2: Use Clearscope to analyze your content
To figure out how to optimize your article for SEO, you'll want to use Clearscope to analyze your article.
Clearscope uses natural language processing to reverse engineer Google's search results and analyze the text of your article. The tool scans the text and identifies keywords and topics that are relevant to the target keyword you provided. This allows Clearscope to tell you what Google wants to see in the article.
In other words, Clearscope is your SEO crystal ball, revealing what Google wants to see in your article.
Here's how to use Clearscope to analyze your content:
- Navigate to the Clearscope report and create a new report or open an existing one.
- In the report, enter the target keyword that you recorded in your Google Doc.
- Copy and paste the text of your article into the Clearscope report.
- Run the report and wait for it to generate the analysis.
Nice job!
Now that you have the report, next you’ll use its contents to get AI to improve the article for you.
Step 3: Use GPT-3 to enhance your content
Copy the list of keywords that don’t show up in the article
Then you’re going to have GPT-3 Playground open
Now you’re going to write a prompt to get GPT-3 to rewrite your article. this prompt is going to include the keywords that are missing (that you copied from Clearscope) and also
Step 4: Fact-check and proofread for accuracy and credibility
Proofreading and fact-checking are crucial steps to ensure the accuracy and credibility of your article. Have someone else perform this task, such as a friend, team member, or editor.
